New York Times Reviews “Corruption in America”
The New York Times has posted its review of “Corruption in America,” the new book by former Democratic candidate for Governor in New York, Zephyr Teachout. It’s a pretty positive review of her look at money in politics in the United States, both today and historically.
I’m wondering whether political candidates using their campaign apparatus to hawk their books (as both Teachout and Gov. Cuomo seem to be doing) is the ‘new normal’ in New York. It strikes me as potential violation of the state’s Election Law, which prohibits the use of campaign funds for purposes “unrelated to a political campaign or the holding of a public office or party position:
§ 14-130. Campaign funds for personal use. Contributions received by a candidate or a political committee may be expended for any lawful purpose. Such funds shall not be converted by any person to a personal use which is unrelated to a political campaign or the holding of a public office or party position.
