Newspapers: Feds Investigating Liu’s Campaign Fund Raising
The New York Times reports that Federal authorities are investigating the fund-raising operation of the New York City Comptroller John Liu. The newspaper says that grand jury subpoenas have been issued that seek campaign records, as well as from a city contractor whose employees were listed as having contributed thousands of dollars to his campaign.
The Daily News also reports on the investigation. Both newspapers report that Liu is expected to retain Paul Schectman, a well-known criminal defense lawyer.
Last month, the Times reported on its own investigation of Liu’s fundraising, which raised questions about the sources of some donations, questioned whether people listed as contributors had actually given their own money and whether some donors listed even existed. Liu may also have some issues with the New York City Campaign Finance Board (CFB) because of his alleged failure to comply with a city requirement to disclose bundlers.
