NYPIRG Challenges State Board of Elections Decision to End Aggregate Donor Caps
Last Friday, NYPIRG issued a report that criticized the state Board of Elections (SBOE) for its decision to stop enforcing the state’s aggregate campaign contribution limit of $150,000 per year.
Last month, the Commissioners decided – in the wake of a recent federal court decision regarding donations to SuperPACs – not to enforce the state’s contribution cap on individual (and limited liability company) donations to candidates as well.
NYPIRG notes that no court has considered whether the state’s $150,000 aggregate limit on donations to candidates and parties is permissible.
The group is calling on the State Board of Elections to hold public hearings on the issue, and for the Senate and Assembly Elections committees to “look into the practices and decisions of the New York State Board of Elections.”
