Attorney General Announces Arrests in Campaign Contribution Case
State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, working with the State Comptroller and the FBI, recently announced the indictment and arrest of three people who are accused of circumventing the state’s election laws.
The owner of a construction company is accused of concealing thousands of dollars in campaign contributions to the former Supervisor of the town of Halfmoon in Saratoga County. He allegedly used business associates and employees to serve as “straw donors,” enabling him to exceed the $1,000 limit on campaign donations under the Election Law.
He is being charged with Offering a False Instrument for Filing, a felony. He is accused of six counts of violating Election Law § 14-120(1), the class A misdemeanor of ‘Campaign Contributions to be Under True Name of Contributor’; and one count of violating Election Law § 14-126(4), a class A misdemeanor of exceeding the campaign contribution limits. Two of his business associates were also charged with violating Election Law § 14-120(1).
This case arose out of an investigation of the Halfmoon Town Supervisor, who was charged with using her campaign funds to pay personal expenses.
