Is Public Financing of Political Campaigns Possible in New York?
Gotham Gazette looks at whether the public financing of political campaigns remains possible in New York. It offers an interesting analysis that is worth taking a look at.
The article notes that while Gov. Cuomo called public financing one of his priorities in his election night victory speech, during the campaign he referred to public financing as “Band-Aids on multiple bullet wounds” in light of the millions of dollars in independent expenditures that were spent on state races.
It also points out that the Senate leadership – which is expected to be solely in Republican hands in the 2015-16 legislative session – is expected to be even less interested in taking up the issue than it was in 2014.
