Moreland Commission to Investigate Public Corruption Launches Web Site, Announces Public Hearings

Earlier this week, the Moreland Commission to Investigate Public Corruption launched its web site, and announced its “first round” of public hearings.

The hearing schedule is:

  • Wed., Sept. 17 @ 6 pm — Pace University in NYC
  • Thurs., Sept. 18 @ 6 pm — Mahoney State Office Building, Buffalo
  • Wed, Sept 24 @ 6 pm — Crossings of Colonie Meeting Room, Loudonville

This round of public hearings will focus on:

  • The adequacy of existing state laws, regulations and procedures involving unethical and unlawful misconduct by public officials
  • The electoral process
  • Campaign finance laws

Also this week, the Commission issued “preservation letters” to the state Board of Elections and the Joint Commission on Public Ethics (JCOPE), directing them to “preserve all documents relevant to the Commission’s charge.”

Friday’s New York Law Journal (behind a paywall) includes an insightful analysis of the Commission to Investigate Public Corruption (and what it is likely to find as it moves forward) by prominent election lawyer Jerry Goldfeder and Myrna Pérez.
