State Senator Indicted for Embezzlement, Obstruction of Justice
Earlier today, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York announced the indictment of State Senator John Sampson (D-Brooklyn) for embezzlement, obstruction of justice and witness tampering. (Read the indictment here, and see the U.S. Attorney’s chart.)
Sampson, who in 2011-12 served as the Minority Leader of the Senate’s Democratic Conference, was not charged with any crimes relating to his Senate office. He is alleged to have embezzled $440,000 from the sale of foreclosed properties in Brooklyn – where he served as a referee — in part to fund his failed 2005 campaign for Brooklyn district attorney.
