US Attorney Says More Needs to Be Done to End Corruption in Albany
After winning the convictions the former Assembly Speaker and the former Senate Majority Leader, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara was interviewed on New York City public radio station WNYC.
Bharara said that Albany lawmakers do “a pretty poor job of self-policing,” but he did not suggest any specific reforms. He said:
“I don’t want to promote any specific reform. It’s a little bit harder to get away with bribery, it’s a little bit harder to get away with extortion if there are more strict limits on outside income. Common sense will tell you, it is much harder to describe a bribe or a kickback as a referral if you don’t have the ability to have the same kind of outside income. I understand there are arguments on the other side as well, it’s really something that should seriously be considered.”
