McDonald Explains His Challenge to New York City’s Campaign Finance Law
Republican New York City mayoral candidate George McDonald explains the rationale for his recent lawsuit in today’s Daily News:
“How does an average New Yorker afford to run for mayor? Under the current rules, unless you are a billionaire or a professional politician, you can’t — not if you want to have any real chance of winning. That’s why I’m challenging the system, the New York City Campaign Finance Board and state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, all of whom are defending the status quo.
The system we have has been rigged by incumbents to favor incumbents — and my defiance will make it better.
Let me explain how.”
McDonald makes some interesting arguments that may come up if New York enacts a campaign finance law modeled after New York City’s, as some have called for.
