State Board of Elections to Investigate ‘Ghost Committees’
Bill Mahoney of Capital New York (behind a paywall, unfortunately) reports that Risa Hellerman, the state Board of Elections’ enforcement counsel, said that she will begin examining campaign committees that are controlled by former office holders that remain active.
Last week, Bill wrote this article, based on his research which found 55 ‘ghost committees’ – campaign committees that were created to support politicians who are no longer in office. Some are long dead, while others are in prison.
Ms. Sugarman asked:
“If [these committees are] still spending money, why are they spending money if they’re not in office, and if they’re doing that, are they doing that appropriately?”
These are good questions.
