State Independent Expenditure Rules Not Yet In Place

Michael Gormley of the AP writes that New York’s regulations for independent expenditures, which are intended to require disclosure of spending and donors by SuperPACs, are not likely to be in place during the current election cycle.

The State Board of Elections (SBOE) originally issued its proposed rule on the topic in February 2012. (Read my post from January 2012 for more background.)

A spokesman for SBOE notes that while there are no regulations currently in place, current law “requires independent expenditures to be disclosed.”

Good government groups are not happy with the regulatory delay, and argue that current law is too vague, is often ignored and has rarely been enforced against SuperPACs.
