Trade Groups Write to JCOPE on Proposed Source of Funding Regulation

Capitol Confidential reports that a number of trade groups have signed onto a letter to JCOPE arguing that its proposed regulations regarding the source of lobbying funding go too far. (Read the groups’ letter here.)

The groups argue that the proposed regulation exceeds JCOPE’s authority under the Public Integrity Reform Act of 2011 (PIRA), violates constitutional rights to associate, and undermines the intent and purpose of the underlying statutory provision.by requiring the reporting of information that is not relating to lobbying activity.

On behalf of our clients who will be impacted by this proposed rule, Hinman Straub has also written to JCOPE encouraging them to adopt a more limited regulation that more closely tracks the underlying statute.

JCOPE’s public comment period on the proposed rule ends today.
