The Times Questions Some Donations to NYC Comptroller

The New York Times has undertaken a review of donations to the campaign of New York City Comptroller John Liu.  The newspaper’s investigation appears to have turned up a number of potential problem donations.

Problems they identified that may violate either state or New York City law include:

  • donors who say they did not give to the candidate;
  • donors who say that an employer or other person gave money for them to give to Liu;
  • failing to have donor cards submitted with campaign contributions filled out by the person making the donation; and
  • accepting bundled donations, but not disclosing the identity of the bundler.

Comptroller Liu is seen as a potential candidate to replace Mayor Michael Bloomberg in the city’s 2013 elections.

Liu said that some of the accusations are not accurate, but that his campaign is reviewing the donors in question.
