Assembly Elections Committee to Take Up Bills to Provide for Public Financing of Campaigns, Closing the LLC Loophole
The Assembly Elections Committee will meet next Wednesday at 9:30 am.
Among other bills, the committee will consider the 2013 Fair Elections Act (A.4980-B, Silver/S.4705 Stewart-Cousins), which provides for public financing of primary and general election campaigns for statewide offices, legislative offices and constitutional convention delegates. It also addresses disclosure of independent expenditures and establishes an enforcement counsel at the State Board of Elections. The Assembly has approved a more limited public financing bill in the past.
It will also take up a bill (A.5067, Mllman/S.166 Squadron) that would limit limited political donations be liability companies (LLCs) to $5,000 per year, the same limit that applies to corporations. The bill has never made it to the Assembly floor.
