Citizens United Challenges New York Attorney General’s Donor Disclosure Rules

Last week, Citizens United announced that it is suing New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, challenging his office’s demand that the group file unredacted copies of its confidential lists of donors with the Attorney General’s Charities Bureau.

Citizens United, a national conservative organization, argues that the requirement violates the First Amendment rights of the group and its supporters. It also alleges that the Attorney General’s office has violated the State Administrative Procedures Act (SAPA).

AG Schneiderman has been aggressive in trying to require disclosure of political spending by non-profit, tax exempt organizations.
