First Moreland Commission Public Hearing to Feature Two U.S. Attorneys

A number of news outlets are reporting that U.S. Attorneys Preet Bharara and Loretta Lynch (of New York’s Southern District and Eastern District, respectively), will be testifying at the first public hearing of the Moreland Commission to Investigate Public Corruption.  Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance will also present testimony. (Read coverage from the Associated Press, Daily Politics and Capitol Confidential.)

Mr. Bharara has prosecuted a number of state officials for public corruption offenses this year, and Ms. Lynch indicted Senator John Sampson in May.  In April, Mr. Vance joined Gov. Cuomo when he proposed the Public Trust Act, a bill that would have created a number of new public corruption offenses in the state Penal Law.

The Commission’s first public hearing will focus on “federal and state criminal laws and any need for additional laws and regulations governing misconduct by public officials.” (No link to the Commission’s press release yet.)

The hearing will begin at 6 p.m. next Tuesday evening (9/17) at Pace University in Lower Manhattan.
