Governor Says He Will Work to Advance Public Financing of Political Campaigns

In a press conference yesterday, Gov. Cuomo told Capitol reporters that he intends will try to build public support for campaign finance reform in the coming months.  He said that the large amounts of money coming into the political system during this year’s presidential campaign will give people “the sense that the system is out of control” and help advance the campaign finance reform effort.

As I wrote in this blog post from late June, the Governor said he will work with reform groups to educate the public and ultimately move the Legislature to act on the issue.

Jimmy Vielkind of the Times Union writes about the issue, and suggests that the Governor may gain leverage on the issue because the Legislature is seeking a pay raise.

Listen to the Governor discussing the issue in an interview with public radio here (the campaign finance discussion beings at the 5:40 mark).
